SInce your question seems to invite all nature of comment, let me say a good thing for Vincent Minelli's 1950s biopic with Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh. It was very intense in a non modern psychotic way.
Best scene (SPOILER!!): Van Gogh goes to see the woman he loves and is barred by her father. Vincent sees a candle on a table, grabs it, and says "Let me see her and talk to her for as long as I can hold my hand in this flame." He burns himself badly, and the woman's father knocks over the candle to stop him from really killing himself.
But that isn't the capper. The capper comes when the woman's father tells Vincent the reason she won't see him is because "She says you disgust her."
Very intense. And sad. Poor guy.

I'm an Art History Major and I sincerely love Van Gogh. If he was alive and I could talk to him I would have a million questions, but he first question of course would be "Dude, what were thinking when you cut off your ear?" Anyway, I really enjoyed the ambiguity of this question. Thanks man!

The first time I saw his paintings in person it made my heart pound. I have never found words to describe the experience to this day, and that was about 23 years ago.
