Dawn can be used to wash dogs (I use it diluted. I pour about an inch into the bottom of another Dawn bottle and then fill with water). ANY shampoo/soap will kill fleas if it is left on the dog long enough, although a proper flea shampoo will work better.
However, if your dog is itchy and does not have fleas it may have skin problems, in which case dish soap is probably too harsh. Try an oatmeal shampoo (for dry skin), or a tar and sulfur shampoo. Failing that you will need to consult a vet.

If your dog's itching is because of dry skin, dish washing liquid could be irritating it. I would recommend using a commercial dog shampoo for itchy skin, like an oatmeal and aloe shampoo. I make my own shampoo in a blender using Guiness beer, cooked instant oatmeal, aloe vera, egg yolk and other ingredients and my dogs have great coats. But sometimes it isn't the shampoo that causes the itching. It may be allergies to food. Try a different shampoo and if that doesn't work, try a food without bad additives like Nature's Recipe- one of their wild game varieties, Authority Oven Baked, Dick Van Patten's Dog Food, Royal Canine Dog food. Use dry and not canned varieties or mix canned and dry and give your dog supplements for skin and coat. Sometimes a dog may need a cortisone shot as a last resort if they start getting lots of sores due to severe allergies. Part the hair and look at the skin and see if you notice sores. A raw diet is excellent too if you have what it takes to maintain it! It is great for their skin.

I've heard about people using Dawn to help get rid of fleas... but if you dog doesn't have fleas then I wouldn't use it. It's main use in dishes is to get oil out and it would dry your dogs skin up.
My Mom's vet recommended giving her dog regular Benedryl. Her dog had a problem wanting to scratch all the time and the Benedryl worked wonders for her. Good luck!

I just found out the other day that Dawn and some other ingredients make for a shampoo to get rid of skunk smell, so I think that your dog would be fine.
You could try feeding your dog a supplement like vitamin E for a less itchy winter coat. We had a doberman whom the vet had taking the vitamin E gels to give her relief.

Dawn dish detergent makes my hands as dry as dry can be, so if I had a dog that was scratching, I would not use it on them..
I would recommend taking your dog to a local reputable groomer, who can bathe your dog in a oatmeal or medicated shampoo and who will brush her out completely to avoid matting her hair. Good Luck.

It could be dry skin, allergies or a number of other things. She needs to be seen by a vet to be diagnosed.
Do not use dawn, especially considering that she may have dry skin. That would only make it worse.
How often have you been bathing it?

Dawn is a detergent and will dry your dogs skin out. Use a pet
shampoo, their ph balanced for a dogs skin and coat. Try using
an oatmeal dog shampoo, excellant for itchy, flaky skin. Try adding a teaspoon of vegtable oil on his dry dog food, it will add
needed moisture to his skin, my vet. told me to do this and it does
help. brushing your dog regularly brings out the natural oils in his coat and skin to aid in healthy skin and coat also.

NO! You wouldn't use it to clean your skin. It is too harsh. Dogs must be prone to allergies, as our dog has had them forever. Get her to the vet to see what else you can do. Our dog is on a high quality dog food and treats (from the vet), medication, plus fish oil capsules. This has helped him
