I've learned one real lesson in my life regarding this:

Never finish with Tequila. That killed me every time.

But I also think it's best to stick with one type of drink through the middle to end.

At the beginning, I have never had any trouble switching drinks around...just drink lots of water as well if you can. But as the night goes on, I've found more success with keeping a favorite and riding it out.

There's nothing wrong with mixing dark and light alcohol. Generally speaking, however, you are more likely to get a hangover when you mix up a lot of different drinks than if you stick with one drink. Mixing a lot of different sweet drinks is especially likely to give you a hangover.

just go easy on the sweet drinks - your hangover will be worse because of the sugars - or drink two waters for every one drink. remember this
liquor before beer - in the clear
beer before liquor - never sicker

If you're talking about shots and no mixers, it will probably make you ill and hung over.
