As long as they are not insulting any other religion, and respecting that other people already may have their own beliefs i think its fine.

Also they can't be too pushy. I don't like someone elses beliefs being rammed down my throat.

Against in general.

Real missionaries - if they are doing charity work - health services, getting food to hungry, building housing, then that is good - that is all some of them do and it is a good service. But if they are trying to convert and change people culture then that is not good. At least anymore you don't have the travesty like with the Native Americans ans other groups where they pretty much tried to completely wipe out the culture.

As far as door knockers - Nothing worse than trying to sleep in on a Saturday and the door knocks and it's missionaries and they don't want to accept please not know I am tired. in fact I have seen that some seem to try and get you when you are tired or may be more susceptible - I have seen JW in parking lots hitting up those getting off graveyard shifts who just want to get home and get to bed.

100% against. My brother-in-law and his family are missionaries. Missionaries are nothing better than blackmailers. The natives are mesmerized by modern technology, and fall for the Biblical song and dance that the missionaries bring with them. The movie, The Gods Must Be Crazy, demonstrates this very phenomenon.

I support missionaries in prayer and finance. They teach people how to farm, raise animals. They help them dig wells for water. Show them how to preserve food, make clothes and so on. They do this for years just to have a chance to make friends, so they can share the gospel with them. They take teams of Doctors and Nurses on "mission" trips to remote areas just for the sole purpose of helping some one see or walk.
Missionaries never hold out the carrot on a stick in front of starving people like you may hear of. They work and live with the people they are sent to.

It's a great alternative to suicide. **** are you about to throw your life away? Become a missionary instead, mightaswell do something. What, you'd be dead anyway, so why not use all that education to do something nice. Some tribesmen chop your head off? Well, that's what you wanted in the first place so don't complain.

And by nice i mean building irigation systems in Africa for example.

As in the case with the Mormons, if they go out because they genuinely desire to then it can be a very rewarding experience. If, however, they go out of a sense of requirement or are forced, it can be a cruel and unberable prison for them. I know several who fit into each category.

Against. Adamantly. Going to poor or troubled countries with an agenda to spread Christianity, knowing full well that religious strife historically and currently causes great, bloody conflicts, while also knowing that struggling, starving, or dying people aren't going to turn down help, is about as ethically and morally corrupt as you can get.

Like LDS missionaries or just missionaries in general?

I think it's great people want to go out and preach what they believe in.

I admire them for their bravery and dedication. In a lot of places, being a missionary is very dangerous.

Missionaries help to destroy native cultures which often have developed their own beneficial techniques (such as magicks*, herbology, etc.), and much can be lost.

*All of what we know as science today was considered magick at one time. Think of the medieval reaction to a holographic projection!
