The absolute record for fastest aircraft was held by the SR-71 Blackbird, for years. But it was recently broken by NASA's X-43 Hyper-X experimental aircraft.
However, the speed of 6,750 mph was achieved with the help of a rocket. So the SR-71's record for the fastest jet aircraft still stands at 2,193.16 mph or Mach 3.3.
Some other fast jets would be:
The fastest commercially available busines Jet aircraft is the Cessna Citation X.
The fastest jet to circumnavigate the globe without refuelling was the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer piloted by Steve Fosset, solo - who also owns a Cessna Citation X!

The fastest aircraft is X-15 with his max speed of Mach 6,85. But X-15 was experimental and was powered by 4 rocket engines. It was between an airplane and a spacecraft.
The fastest operative airplane is Sr-71, that performed Mach 3,3.
Sr-71 was powered by jet engines that acted like ramjets at high speeds, not by conventional jet engines.
The fastest Airplane now in service is MiG-31. MiG-31 can exceed Mach 3 for short periods, but not in routine use(after Mach 3 flight engines must be revisioned). Max speed is usually limited at Mach 2,83.
The fastest civil airplane(liner) was Concorde that performed a maximum speed of Mach 2,04.

The fastest acknowledged speed is ~2,193.1669 mph for the SR-71, built 40 freakin' years ago. It also set a coast-to-coast record of 2,124 mph when one was retired and put on display at the Smithsonian Dulles annex. It is believed that it's classified speed is significantly higher, and there may be aircraft in service with both Russia and the US with similar top speeds, although it is unlikely that they have the sustained and high altitude performance of the SR-71.

SR-71 Blackbird.....top speed still classified....believed to be over Mach 4.
Has flown from Los Angeles to Washington DC in 45 minutes...
Pilot joked he would have been quicker, but he ran into some bad weather.
