Have you considered a roast leg of lamb. It's delicious. Simply cut some slits in the meat (not to deep) and insert some cloves of garlic. About a half dozen or so should be good. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and lay bacon on the top. Roast at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for a few hours depending on size of lamb.

We always make a fresh or smoked ham as well as turkey because not everyone eats turkey, even on Thanksgiving. Also, a pork crown roast is a show stopper for any occasion. Go to your butcher and let him prepare it for you (per # people) and tell him to give you those little white paper "leggings" to put on the bones that stand up around the roast. Serve with apple walnut stuffing & orange-cranberry sauce and no on will even miss the Turkey! Enjoy!

I presume you are referring to the American Thanksgiving holiday. If so I'm with momcat and dogloverd; as two separate courses: for me it would probably be a chilled hot-smoked fish, perhaps mackerel with a variety of dipping sauces, followed by a venison roast with a fancy brown sauce. Accompanied by wines not from the large popular west coast growing areas but from the east coast: perhaps a red from Virginia and a white
from New York or southern New England.

Here is a recipe that is definitely not the norm for Thanksgiving, and it could certainly be served with a flourish suitable for the Thanksgiving table:
BAKED ROCK FISH STUFFED WITH CRAB IMPERIAL
1 to 3 lbs. rockfish
2 slices bacon
2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. lemon juice
STUFFING:
1/2 lb. crab meat
1 egg
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
2 slices bread (crumbs)
Mix all ingredients together. Place in fish cavity. Put bacon strips on top of fish. Sprinkle lemon juice over fish. Cover. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour uncovered, bake until brown.

Baked ham (the kind with a bone).
OOPS!! missed that part.
Venison is popular around here--and deer season is open during Thanksgiving.
How about crown roast of pork?

I like ham.many people use foods unique to region, shrimp salmon , wild game . Turkey is only tradition because it is supposed to be what first Pilgrims had, no evidence to prove this.
