There is no reason whatsoever that you can not go out "alone" and be friends.

Just be sure he realizes this and is not wasting his time if he has other feelings for you. Be honest with him. Friends are supposed to be able to talk about anything and work it out.

If you keep doing this and you do not tell him how you feel then you could be using him for comfort reasons. That is not right for him.

If something in your "gut feeling" is keeping you with him maybe there is something there. Time will tell.
