I have a japanese Akita dog got him from a recue centre aged1 (now 3.5) whenever he has to do a number 2 (poo) he circles several times in the same spot sum time up to 50-60 turns quite fast any one know why he does this

Many dogs do this to stimulate the bowel action. One of mine does this, and will rarely be able to poo without it..some dogs need to run, and others just kind of spin..

My Lab will circle no less then what seems a 150 times then normally use the bathroom. I don't think you should be worried or anything, it's normal.

Chetco's answer is great ... hadn't realised that circling stimulated bowel action ... wonder if it works with people? lol.
I'd always thought that it was an instinctive reaction - that they did it to flatten the grass so that they'd have a nice flat place to go.
An instinctive reaction a bit like my Bengals always swiping their paws across the top of the water bowl before they drink... I think it's to get leaves & other floating matter off the top ... not that I have leaves or other floating matter in my kitchen ... lol

Circling doesn't stimulate bowel motion - it makes you dizzy! He is making a nice flat toilet area, crushing all the imaginary reeds and grasses, as he would have done in the wild

its probably to make sure no body's been there before and it's his own space to do what he has to do. plus if he does it in that spot it makes it easier to clean up
