(excluding the Coast Guard) it seems Pilots and some AF special forces are usually the ones at the highest risk in the AF during a time of war. So if you had to choose a relatively safe service the Air Force would be the choice?

All positions in the armed services carry some degree of risk.

This is really not a very well thought out question. In a war, who can predict what happens? Most of the Reserves that are in Iraq were feeling pretty safe, huh? Plus, a grunt is a grunt, by design they go first, and as a result many die first. The only true benefit to the Air Force is that they eat the best of all the Armed Services

the Air force doesn't have grunts. the closest they have is Security Forces (Military Police). Up until a little while ago (months) they were only tasked with protecting flightlines and gate duty. However, due to the high number of patrols that must be conducted, they are now going "outside the wire" to do foot and vehicle patrols through the cities. If all you want is some college money, then maybe you should have studied harder in high school. All military jobs are inherently dangerous in one way or another. You big baby.

The Air Force assigns people to Army ground units as observers, forward intelligence, and medics. In War Time, the Coast Guard is under Dept. of Defense, that's the safest place!

I suppose if you had one of the VERY FEW remaining desk jobs in the AF you might be relatively safe. The Air Force is reducing most of its desk jobs right now. My hsband works on the flightline and he is at high risk during deployment. Try fixing a plane while mortars are going off. An undetonated mortar landed less than 20 feet from where he was working. NO job is safe in any branch of the armed forces right now. The Air Force isn't a sit down chill out easy job. These are hard working men and wmen and I am getting seriously tired of the insinuation that AF jobs are slack because they AREN'T!! My husband work 12 hour shift 6 days a week. He'd work LESS in the freakin' army! But we love the life :-)

Depends on the career field. The Air Force, though not often televised are in Iraq and losing people everyday. I am Air Force and in the 2nd most deployed career field. But actually if you're wanting to join a branch that is "safe" I would go Navy. Their deployments generally are on a ship/carrier/sub. So they don't see too much tent and desert time.

Air Force is probably the safest branch of the military to serve in during this time and day. But if you are considering joining any branch of service, talk to recruiters from all branches and decide from there. Make a list of things you are looking for or a reason you are joining a certain branch....ie Uniform, living conditions, opportunities for advancement, food, jobs......you make your list, there is a base to start.

A grunt is a word used for the infantry man , The air force dont have infantryman. That does not mean that they are not put in harms way . they have units that guards planes and bases. but over all i would say it is the safest.

i wouldnt say safest because everything they do has some risk to it no matter what feild you are in. There are different types of risks for each job like when you are on the ground it is easier to be shot than when you are in the air, but if something goes wrong when you are in the air how will you recover especially when you have to have an emergency landing in enemy territory.

Depends on the severity of the war but yes it is safer than the other branches of service but I have to be honest with you. If the reason you didn't consider the other branches is because you are scared, then maybe service isn't for you. No disrespect intended, just my opinion.
