They give off hydrogen gas which is Explosive! they need to be well ventilated....

I wouldn't use them indoors. They give of potentially explosive gases in use. The also contain hazardous materials, lead and sulfuric acid. The battery itself may also explode, even without the gas exploding or buring.

Yes so long as you have plenty of air circulating to get rid of the gases that the battery will produce making sure that no naked flames are near!
