Usually pie has some type of stuffing on the inside, like fruit, and the top layer is often a hard crust (alon with the bottom layer and edges). Cake is all-the-way through fluffy material, like brownies.

Pie is a filling baked in short-crust pastry. The filling can be savory or sweet.
Cake is a leavened confection, baked from a batter, and then sometimes iced or frosted.
