Wow, lots of great answers here already. You do know that you have 8 plugs in most 2.3 engines with 4 under the intake don't you?? Sometimes folks don't realize it because you can't usually see them easily. If the check engine light is on then pulling codes might give a better clue. I am leaning either towards crankshaft sensor, or one of the two ignition coil modules. Spark jumping can do this. The gas smell though can be either unburned gas, or actual leaking gas from a bad fuel line, bad injector, etc. You should easily be able to see leaking gas as the smell will be strong enough for you to find it with both your nose and eyes, or drips on the ground. Also cam sensors if that engine uses one can give similar troubles. When you changed your plugs were they all "black with soot" or were only some of them dirty?? That could also give a clue as to whether there is actual engine problems like the lifters mentioned, busted piston, etc.

A Little more information on the car would help. Is it fuel injected? Carbureted? What year is the car? What motor is in the car? 4, 6, or 8? Has it become worse as the cold weather sets in? We really need more information. I am basing my information on the fact the car has a carburetor. You may have a stuck choke which is giving you such horrible power. There is also the possibility that you have a burnt valve or bent valve. The fuel smell is it coming out of the back of the car or the front of the car? You may have a fuel leak. Please give more information for more accurate help.

if your getting a loud clicking noise then it could well be a bad rockerarm or a bent push rod, if its more of a loud thump sound could be piston slap(ie you would have a spun main bearing in this case) and you would really hear it at all times the eng is running, smelling gas real bad might be a sign that it needs a good carb ajustment that your running to rich of mixture, im just a back yard/shade tree mech, so i sugest to you that you take it to a pro, it might cost you a few dollors but your better knowing whats going on with your ride rather than second guess it, so take it in and have them do a thorough diagonostics on it, good luck mr mustang lol,,,,,,,stinger5906

You could have lots of problems, you could have an injector stuck open,or leaking, a fuel rail leaking,or possibly headgaskets leaking. If you smell gas under the hood, I would have it looked at by someone who knows about cars, as it could be a fire hazzard. I would not drive the car until you have it looked at. and with noises, they can be tought to figure out if you can't hear them, sorry.

From the engine or the tail pipe. both way - opportunities are severe that moisture amassed and replaced into being burnt off besides the undeniable fact that some cases that is an illustration of oil burning. purely save the fluid ranges as they ought to it won't be able to be a issue at the moment. solid success

well OK, you smell gas that means it's getting it, but it shakes and accelerates poor , that means it isn't burning it properly , do a major tune up , rotor , distributor cap , wires , does the timing mark bounce around ? have you replaced the vacuum hoses ? fuel filter ? does it have oil in it ? does it need premium ? keep at it , troubleshooting is a process of elimination , do all this and if it still acts the same come back and tell us more , year , engine , carb etc.
