Funny you asked this, My husband went to our sons parent teacher conference today and askes the same ?? She siad that all the kids do it and just to let them know that they wrote it backwards and have them write it again the correct way. Usually p,q,3,e. He/she will grow out of it. Also with making the letters the same size and spacing then too. - hope this answered your question

My Mother in Law was a kindergarten teacher for 30 years. When my 5yo daughter started writing (snd still at almost 6) she writes some letters backwards g's and a's mostly. I asked my MIL about it and she said it is completely normal and some kids might do it unlt 2nd grade, but with practice and patience showing the right way to do it. They will turn those letters around.
My daughter is doing well now that she started school. still find some of her g's backwards but it is getting better.

I would not be concerned at this point. This is all normal. All kids go through this. My 6 yr. old still has problems with his lower case b's and d's. He does fine with everything else and has no problems in other academic areas. My 3 yr. old writes many of his letters backwards just as his brother used to. I also used to teach pre-school and I don't think I've ever had a student who didn't have at least one letter they always wrote backwards. It is a normal developmental thing that all kids go through while they learn to write.

Dyslexia is about much more than writing letters backwards. There is much more to it than that. If your child is having no other problems then I wouldn't worry. Plus, at 5, he is still developing his language and reading ability so it is too early to start worrying about it.

No...at only 5, this is very normal. In kindergarten and first grade, they'll work out these things.

2's and 6's are often confused, as well as b, d, p, q and g (after all, these are all a circle with a stick, aren't they?).

You may not remember it, but most of us wrote a few of our letters backward for quite a while. If he starts having problems with not being able to read, you might be concerned, but in the meantime, just relax, and realize that he's only five!

Ok i am 12. I have a cousin and she is 6 and she still writes her letters backwards, but that is because she has dyslexia . Also, her brother Steven writes his letters backwards sometimes and he is 5 ,too. But , get your son tested just in case, you have to be careful with that.

Many kids write some letters backwards even in the 1st/2nd grade. He would only need to be tested if he is not making progress learning in his classroom. Have you talked to his teacher?

No. It's pretty normal for children to struggle with some letters or numbers for a while. I had a daughter and took her a year to get her 5's consistently correct. And now she is an honor student at one of the top high schools in the country.

At the age of 5 it isn't a big deal. Most children go through writting some of their letters backwars. My son did it with his G's. Should your child still be doing it by the mid of his/her second grade year then I would talk with the teacher and possibly get him/her tested.
