There is never anything wrong in showing a genuine interest in someone. You have a real desire in wanting to get to know him better. Guys can be a little "thick headed" when it comes to subtle hints, so your idea of saying hello in the halls would be a nice start. Allow those hello's to turn into a conversation at lunch. Allow that lunch at school to be your spring board into a lunch away from school. Etc..., he did show you a big smile, and those are generally saved for people with whom he is comfortable with. I think that quite possibly that was his shy way of inviting you into his close circle. I think that you know what do do from here. Trust what feels right, never allow fear to control your life. You deserve the best things in life! Do not be afraid to go and get them!

If you're as female as your icon would indicate, you CAN'T be a stalker. Maybe you could be an overimposing admirer, but guys CAN'T have stalkers.
You can't r*pe the willing, after all.

No, if you like a guy talk to him. I don't think it is possible to scare guys off. If he says he doesn't like it, at least you tried and won't wonder "What if I had tried talking to him?"
