Why don't you try playing along with songs already recorded, but play harmonies, make up riffs, keep up. Try to play along with something you ordinarily wouldn't listen to, in order to see what else is out there. You'd be surprised what you can snatch from other types of music. i.e.Dolly Pardon-Whitney Housten

You should have a jam with the band as an audition so you are auditioning them to. Don't get offended that you have to audition though man, they don't know that your mad on the Axe. It depends how good the band is to decide how good you have to be to play with them and the style and intricacy of the music makes a big difference to. If they are just thrashing out some 3 chord no brainers then my left nut could play lead with them and if they are playing some heavier sh1t then you need to practice with them lots and get in your bands niche. Good luck and ROCK ON!!!!

The Ramones made an entire carrier out of 5 chords. With the experience you have you can probably pick up and play with any number of local bands, you just need to develop some self confidence. There are usually ads hanging in your neighborhood gear shop looking for guitarists or you could try putting up your own ad (especially anywhere music lessons are given) to find some other people who want to play out but don't have a group yet to do it with. Good luck and don't forget to have fun with it. -z

Just do it. You have plenty of training and improvising takes a lot of practice. If you can play the lead and chords thats plenty.
Work on improvising in between gigs and have fun.

Ig the band is Gooooood, you have to be better than all the others who are auditioning. If the band is young and new, you still have to be better than everyone else to get hired. You must know lots of chords and be able to stay on the beat, at least!!

Depends on the kind of music you wanna play.. if it's something like punk rock, then you were probably ready about 4 years ago. I say just go for it - you don't really need to be a virtuoso. The most important thing is to be having fun with what you can do. ;-)

Ouch, that was bad, you missed the train didn`t you pal, you should have started playin`live for at least six years ago, well I guess there is always keyboards?????
Sorry pal, had to do it, you are ready when you feel ready pal, but it sounds as you should step out as soon as possible.
It is good to practice alone, but playin`with others will always make you better, live gigging even further my friend, so go out there and rock dude!!!!
Peace and love from Norway
