very little I'm afraid - most cough medicines are expensive and none of them work that well at all..... stick with the honey and lemon or sipping hot water.
If it has been going on longer than a few weeks speak to your doctor.

A dry tickly cough is horrible. The best thing I've found was inhaling steam for a few minutes. When you first inhale it, you cough a little more, then it settles. After inhaling the cough is so much better and it lasts quite a while too. Put a towel over your head over a basin of very hot water and breathe in slowly and deeply. Hope that helps...

No over the counter drugs contain penicllin. It is something you have to have prescribed by your gp. For a tickly/dry cough, I would recommend you have a quick chat with your local chemist/pharmacist as you may be on other medications that could interact with a cough syrup. They'd be able to advise you better anyway.

A cough is there for a reason - to clear secretions. You should not try to stop it during the day.
I would advise taking a suppressent only at night if it was preventing sleep. Try a codeine based suppresent - in the uk paracetamol and codeine is effective (8mg codeine per tablet).
If the cough has been going on for more than two weeks I would advise seeing a medic as it may need futher investigation
Hope this helps

All over the counter medicines in the UK are free from penicillin. Providing you are not on any other medicines and otherwise healthy pholcodeine linctus is quite good but can make you constipated. Honey and hot lemon is still just as good as the pharmaceutical alternatives! Its always worth stating what other medicines you take (if any) as sometimes it can be caused by medicines.

All OTC drugs are penicillin free because antibiotics can only be obtained by a prescription in the US, so nothing you pick up will have it.
(not true in Mexico which is why there are major anit-biotic resistant organism infections there, self dosing on anit-biotics BAD!)
Best to suck on a Halls with honey or something like that.

Balm of gilliad, I think, is a wonderful cough medicine. I think it is only available in health food shops. I loved it as a kid. Faked coughs if my brother had a cough so that I would get some too!
