It is called toxoplasmosis. But, if you have already owned cats in your life & changed litterboxes before, you have most likely been exposed & built up immunity. You can have a test done by your doctor to see if you have been exposed. If so, it is not a problem. The vets I worked for used to tell people this: if you are still worried, have your spouse or someone else change the litter box while you are pregnant anyway, for peace of mind.

The 'virus' you are thinking of is not a virus at all. it is called toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. People are more likely to get toxoplasmosis from eating undercooked meat or gardening than from contact with pet cats.
The important thing to remember is that when changing the litter box, always wash afterwards, wear disposable gloves when cleaning it, keep the cat indoors, stay away from strays, don't feed the cat raw or undercooked meat, only cat food, and if you have a significant other, let them change the litter box (every day). Keep the cat UTD on vaccines and be sure to have it spayed or neutered for maximum health!

The thing with cats is that when you are pregnant you should stay away from the litter box. If you have someone else who can take care of the litter box then you should be all set for getting a cat.

All the answers on here are correct. Pregnant women can have cats and many do. You just need to have someone else change the litterbox for you. You can also pet your cat and all that good stuff, but just wash your hands before you eat or touch your mouth. As many have already stated, folks who have had cats all their lives have already built up immunity to this parasite. This immunity is passed on to the fetus. My girlfriend has 2 healthy babies and she has 2 healthy cats! Good luck!

It's not the cat that carries the virus, it's the cat's excrement. Having a cat while you're pregnant is okay, but wash your hands thoroughly after handling the cat and have someone else clean the litter box.

The cat is not a carrier, the virus is found in its feces. You can get the same virus from the feces of bats and rodents--including hamsters and all the wild mice and squirrels living in the city--maybe even in your attic.
You will need to avoid animal feces in general during your pregnancy.
