I had my blood drawn today for the first time in years and was surprised by how thin it was. It looked like cherry kool-aid; as thin as water and a lightish red color. Is this normal?

Yes, if you're really concerned ask your doctor for a pro-time test. This checks how quickly your blood thickens. If it's too short you need to go on blood thinners, if it's too long your a hemopheliac and there are meds for that as well. Doctors actually check this with normal blood tests, but ask and see what they say. Good luck.

Blood varies by 'thickness' only in certain disease states. It is not possible to determine blood viscosity by visual inspection. Hemoglobin is a major determinant in viscosity, but other molecules (such as triglycerides and thrombocytes which are large) play a role as well. In addition, the absence or excess of clotting factors may play a role, but this should have been evident to the invidual who drew the blood - if either was present.
