I am about at my wits end here, can someone help me? All I want to find out is if 'hailing' a cab from Greenwich Village if you will be able to take the cab to Rutherford NJ and about how much it costs. I have called more cab companies than I have in a lifetime and I can't get an answer :( The distance is 12.4 miles....do they have a limit to where they go?! Gawd I feel ignorant here, but I could use some help....thanks to any and all!
P.S. I live in the midwest...i.e. ignorant of NYC cabs :)

It might be hard to find a cab driver willing to take you to NJ! And they will probably not be able to get there without you giving them very specific directions!

Also, you will have to pay tolls, and set a pre-determined fare for leaving the city.

Trips Beyond the City:
For a trip beyond the limits of the City of New York, except for the Counties of Westchester or Nassau, or the facilities of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at Newark Airport, the fare shall be a flat rate (a flat rate is a definite amount fixed between the driver and the passenger at the start of the trip).

You might want to try one of the bigger car service companies:

212-777-7777 or 212-666-6666

Also, you might want to look into taking the bus. If you are going to Ruthorford to go to Giants Stadium/Continetal Airlines Arena - there are buses to events that leave from the Port Authority. Try calling NJ Transit - 1-800-772-2222 and see if they have a bus that goes to your destination.

Do take the advice of previous posters and call ahead for a car service. The category they would be under is limousine, but don't be scared - a lot of them are regular livery cars that are nothing like the stretch $100/hr limos that come to mind.

NOT that yellow cabs won't take you to Rutherford (BTW - are you going to the Continental airlines arena? Giants Stadium? If so, you can search for public transport ideas - PATH and buses take you there!!)

Go to the site below for official NY Taxi and Limo Commission

I only know of several in Brooklyn, so will not even give any numbers.

Just get in a cab and tell him where you are going. The meter will start and you pay at the end. If you want a firm price before you go you need to call a car service and schedule ahead of time.

NYC cabs will only go in the 5 boro's so NJ is out of the question. Try this phone number 212 333-3333. You can also try livery cabs. Best of luck.
