You know, I've often wondered the same thing about lobster. Those must have been some very hungry people!
I think the milk thing is a little easier to understand. I can imagine a baby who's lost it's mother but still needs milk. In a situation where there are no other lactating women around, cow's milk probably seemed like a good compromise.
Also in some instances, like where the water has become tainted somehow, it might have been the safest thing for people to drink.

I don't know. But it was a really dumb thing to do. Cuz now people are obsessed with drinking milk, but it's actually really bad for you. It's odd that humans are the only ones who drink the milk of another species, and who drink milk past infancy. Cow's milk is for BABY COWS! And human milk is for baby humans. It would be weird to see a cow drinking milk from a woman, wouldn't it? Well, that's equivalent to what people are doing...
Makes sense, no? That's why I don't drink milk ;]

i think about that every time i open a bottle of milk! who was the first guy that said, "i think i'll drink whatever comes out of these when i squeeze them." maybe his wife didn't have any milk for her baby and they were desperate???
