Use documentation!!! If she is ill and misses work, stick to your policy hand book and demand a doctor's note for her to return. If she cannot, research employment laws where you are (not sure where you are, but here, you must have good reason to can someone or you'll get sued) Or, find another reason to fire her that is NOT HEALTH RELATED and that you have documentation of, like poor work performance, etc.

cause people are afraid something else can go wrong.- It's stupid what some people would come in the emergency room for. I'd only go if i needed stitches, not for a bloody nose. Also people are afraid of life cause they fear the unknown and are afraid of what " could " happen and it happens sometimes anyway. So maybe they do have a reason to be that way or they are just scared. Either way, the unknown or fact can be bad as they anticipate cause I lived through some bad stuff. So i dont know if they have a valid concern or not.

Hi 2cool. How do you know she´s a hypochondriac?...How do you know that her ailments are not real?. There are people who are in their 30´s and do get sick. I do not thing she "self induce hallucinations". I do agree that is really hard to get work done by a sick person. I do not think that the way out is to fire her. Does she have a family to support? You should talk to her and give her a chance. Maybe advice her to go to a doctor to get/know exactly what illness she has. Maybe the doctor can also give "the period of time" that she needs to recover. Argentox2@yahoo.com

Employees that you "master"?
"no time for weak-minded people"?
Hypochondria is a real disorder, not one chosen by the sufferer. If she is indeed a hypochondriac, in her mind, the illnesses are just as real as if they weren't imaginary.
If you do fire her, you had better pray that your diagnosis is correct. Otherwise, you could find yourself in litigation and paperwork up to your masterful armpits.
With the way you express your attitude, I'd be willing to bet that there is an equal amount of resentment from your employees towards you.

Do not presume to diagnose nor to 'deal with' the health problems of another person - and hypochondriasis is indeed a health problem. In addition to a poorer quality of life, these individuals expend greater health care dollars while producing fewer goods and services. Some of these individuals are found to have Munchhausen Syndrome, a particularly pernicious form of the disorder.

Have an absense policy and after x number of absenses terminate. Any drs note does not count toward an absense but no drs note is one point off for a call in. As long as its clear in writing and employee sees it and signs it this is ok and legal.

I have dealt with this sort of problem before and the best thing you can do is to instruct everyone not to ask her how she is feeling for any reason. I also would not have any problems with getting rid of a person such as this if you can find reason enough as they do not change their ways, but in fact the problem only seems to grow.

It doesn't matter what she is always complaining about, as long as she is completing her duties according to her job. Good luck but it would not be fair to not master her less than your other employees

I'd recommend her to a doctor first, so he can "prescribe" some placebos. If she doesn't go, or if she does but isn't cured after that, then I'd let her go.

Let her go ASAP.
If it is a new ailment every week, she is taking you for a ride as long as she can, and she knows it.
