First, it is AWOL. Second, yes, you are STILL a veteran, but you are not an Honorable Veteran. If your question is referring to veterans' benefits, you must be discharged with an honorable or general under honorable conditions to receive those.

If you go AWOL (absent without official leave) you either get caught and face your punishment, or you stay un-caught. If you get caught, you might get fined and some brig time . . possible discharged, but you are still a veteran - maybe not with an honorable discharge tho.
If you haven't been caught, you are in a strange situation, because you are technically still in the service until you are officially discharged.
But generally speaking, yes, you are a vet even if you went AWOL during your time in service.

How was the AWOL punished? IF it was AWOL and the person completed their enlistment then yes they would be considered a veteran. Someone guilty of desertion would be a different matter perhaps. Benifits will depend on what type of discharge. AWOL does not usually lead to a FGOS discharge or dishonorable.

First off let me clarify it's no longer called AWOL it's called UA or unathorized absence. And I think you're confusing two different things. A veteran is anyone who has SERVED in the military regarless of their disposition, ie. honorable discharge, dishonorable discharge, etc. However, one who has been dishonorably discharged or discharged for the good of the service would not be entitled to veteran's benefits. Hope that clarifies it for you.

Yes, HOWEVER, depending on the final disposition of the AWOL charge you may NOT be entitled to any benefits, or only entitled to some and/or you may have to repay some you have already received (such as Bonuses, Loan Repayment etc.). Veterans benefits are directly related to the type of discharge you receive which is where the final disposition of the AWOL charge will have its impact.

AWOL, is AWOL. You do it and get caught the military has the right to punish you. They can send you to jail as part of your punishment. You are considered a felon. You have no rights. All of your benefits are gone. Why would you do something this freaking idiotic. It's just stupid. Suck it up and don't get anybody else killed.

No, because a veteran must have an honorable discharge and a person who goes AWAL will probably receive a dishonorable discharge and will not be eligible for VA benefits.Good luck.
