Something like a specific thing that for some reason we will never overcome in life, but that we are called upon to have to revisit repeatedly - like so much unlearned history? (those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it)
If so, do you think we only have one, or do we have several?
I used to think we had several, but now I'm beginning to think we, or at least I, only have one.

I don't mean that I only have one thing to learn, or one sin to overcome. I have many, many sins to overcome. But I think that maybe there's one "lifelong" thing that I will have to work on throughout my life, in addition to the "little" things.

I don't think you're understanding what I mean.
The particular thing or area that is the lifelong "homework" as one called it, is so difficult that you can't just **poof** overcome it. No matter how hard you try it can not be overcame (??) in this life. It's something that you must still try to overcome, but it's something that only Christ can take from you. Like for Johnny_zondo it could be his atheism.
Yes, we're here to gain experience, but just like we all have particular talents given to us, and our trials are specific to us, could we not also have one particular thing that in the pre-existence we R E A L L Y needed help with?

Many people have besetting sins in their lives that they struggle with for a long time. But the Bible says:

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

As a Christian counselor I've tried to help people with this type of issue and sometimes they are successful and sometimes they continue on with their struggle. Basically it seems to me that the ones who don't overcome usually don't see their particular sin as an enemy who needs to be defeated or they don't want to do the work that it takes to overcome in that area of their life.

God will help us to overcome our enemies but He calls us to join in the battle and to see sin as an enemy. If we call a sin our friend some of the time and invite it into our life He isn't going to give us the victory.

No I don't.

I came to the conclusion that karma - outside of instant karma - doesn't make sense to me, so therefore it doesn't exist (or I just don't believe in it).

I just don't see why someone or something would make us live over and over until we got something right. That just seems silly to me.

Or wait a minute - you aren't talking about karma, are you? I think I misread this.

I don't believe we're "given" things. I believe we are what we are. Most of us try to fix the things that we see as faults. I think it's just the human condition.

We all have the same thing to work on.
That one thing is to experience yourself and your relationship with the world around you.
It is by this act that God can know himself.

If you think you only have one thing to over come; over come it and you will see the next. Keep on keep'en on.
