My husband just had a DOUBLE knee surgery on April 20th. He is a senior citizen. It has been very successful for him. He went from a high walker to a regular walker, to two canes, to one cane & now needs no canes at all. Before the surgery he was in horrible pain all the time when he walked.

Incidentally he is also very overweight. But the surgery has been a blessing to him.

He did spend about 4 weeks in hospital plus 4 weeks in rehab after the surgery. But is doing fine now.

Good luck to her.

Knee replacement is very effective for people who have had moderate to severe knee pain due to arthritis.

By alleviating pain, or at least most of it, people are able to resume a more productive lifestyle and often return to regular walking, low impact aerobics, swimming, etc when these things would've been too painful before the sugery.

Your grandmother can expected to have about 2-3 months of physical therapy where they will work on mobility, walking, stretching and strengthening. Yet, full recovery really takes about a year. The most painful part about the therapy is the stretching required to restore the motion in the knee.

Complications are somewhat uncommon, but can inlcude a blood clot, infection, or prosthetic rejection. There are others, but these are the most common. She will most likely be receiving blood thinners and "TED" hose to prevent blood clots and she will be mobilized early to prevent pneumonia as well as blood clots. Many people are treated with anitibiotics after surgery to prevent infection and the wound is inspected by the nurse while she is in the hospital.

She will receive some physical therapy while she is in the hospital, but will probably either go home and have home physical therapy (later to outpatient) or go to an extended care facility if she is unable to safely return home.

I have seen more than a hundred patients after knee replacement over the last 6 years. I can recall only two or three who were not happy with their results, one had a poorly-fitted prosthesis and the other had a severe infection that required a revision. I have, on occasion, seen patients for a revision after their "parts" wore out much sooner than expected. The vast majority, however, report "I wish I had done it years ago!" Most of them also report that the pain they have at about 1-2 months post-operatively is less than it was before the surgery.

Best wishes to your grandmother!

Knee replacement surgery has become commonplace these days. My husband had one in 1994, he was completely unable to walk, his replacement knee is plastic and steel, but I hear now they are using knees from cadavers. He was up and walking the day after the surgery, and still is.

The price of knee joint replacement surgery is very low in India as compared to USA, UK and Canada. My cousin also got her hip replacement surgery in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She is totally pain free now. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as all joint surgery is not covered by insurance in USA or by NHS in the UK. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps
