Because they would make up idols of gold- they would worship their own making of an idol when they felt like God was not with them- they complained a lot- and doubted God a lot...that is why in the Bible it says you shall put no other gods before me---they aren't real gods- but people think they are- but they are false gods.

Psalm 4:2
How long, O men, will you turn my glory into shame ? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods ? Selah

Psalm 40:4
Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.

Jeremiah 13:25
This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you," declares the LORD, "because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods.

Deuteronomy 4:35
You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other.

Deuteronomy 4:39
Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other.

Deuteronomy 5:7
"You shall have no other gods before me.

that's a good question.

To fully understand the answer one must remember the society of the time. This was a time where men worshiped various gods an forces of nature.

Many of these forces actually existed and by worshiping them and doing rituals you could gain somthing. These forces existed to allow free will, so that one could say look my god also grants me powers.

what G-d is saying is that do not use these other forces (gods) but only focus on me because I am the source of all that power and I am giving you direct access. It would be like a king saying you could ask him to help you with a problem any time you need and insted you go and ask his servent. Its an insult for the king to be compared to his servent.

thus the reason for the commandment not to worship other gods (forces)

God supposedly said not to have any other Gods before him. I take that to mean that the other gods are still in existance and I can worship them or call on them in times of need but for all major things I am supposed to call of God with a capital 'G'.

There is one true God; and there are many false gods (including man, Gen. 3:5-6) He did not want other 'gods' ahead of him.

There were others. The Bible mentions Asherah and Baal. There were also the gods of Egypt. All real, all capable of miracles. The God of Israel was more powerful than these, and could suppress them.

The Christian assumption is that these were either fallen angels, or powered by fallen angels.

There are other gods. Those that are idol (man made) and spiritual gods in the evil realm. God is the ONLY God we should serve.

Because demonic forces seek to lead humans into worshiping them as they use their supernatural powers to counterfeit God.

1 Corinthians 10:19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.

2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Leviticus 17:7 So they shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices to goat demons, after whom they whore. This shall be a statute forever for them throughout their generations.

Uh, well I think the point is not to worship "false" gods, which means things that arent gods, examples, could be money or material possesions (and I do not mean having things, but being obsessed with anything or anyone to the point that you appear to "worship" them)
