A bartender should have a great smile, sense of humor, charm, good with their hands, and good interpretating skills. Let's tackle these traits one at a time. They need a great smile because, well, you would want them to be happy, not like someone off of the Addams Family. They need a sense of humor so people would want to go to that bar, not be turned away from it by the blank bartender. Also because good humor results in people buying more drinks. Charm because that would result in more customers and those customers buying lots of drinks. Good with their hands because it would be good for the bartender to be able to toss the bottles around and have cool tricks. Last but not least, good interpreting skills because they will need to have to figure out what the drunk people are saying.
Hope this helps!

A Bartender's duties include identifying and serving drinks and sometimes food like bar snacks, sandwiches and soups in a pleasant, efficient manner, operating cash registers and draught dispensing equipment, purchasing and checking in supplies, requisitioning of stock from cellars and displaying products on shelves and having a knowledge of legislation in relation to hygiene, safety and licensed premises.
A Bartender's job is demanding, but it is also very interesting and varied. Bartenders meet people from all walks of life and are busiest when most people have finished work.
Working hours are very varied and often involve night shifts at unusual times - in the evenings, at weekends and over holiday periods.
Bars can be very busy, noisy places with all kinds of customers from groups of young men to elderly people (and children are allowed in some bars).
As a barperson, you will need to be enthusiastic, have a friendly personality and able to get along with most people. You must be able to handle a difficult person with ease and finesse. You should be able to multi-task, work in a team, sometimes with chefs and cooks and have good communication skills. You need to be aware of hygiene and personal cleanliness, be good with numbers, and able to lift and move heavy items. You'll be on your feet most of the time so you'll need plenty of stamina.
Most important you need to have the ability smile under pressure and have a watchful eye. It is you job to know what is going on with everyone in your bar. You are responsible for anything that could happen. Good or bad.

Personality and skills. I was amazed one time when my friend and I went out and the bartenders started juggling the bottles and I couldn't believe they didn't drop them. But what I think is most important is that a bartender doesn't drink behind the bar.

The best ones are great listeners and they do not gossip. Drunks will spill their hearts out to you. It is important to keep your customers troubles private.

Also knowing how to pour a stiff drink helps. There is no shame in someone asking for more wash to lighten up their drink. It may even help your tip. But if you pour them more wash than booze, you may get no tip at all.

Number 1 rule "what happen's in the bar stay's in the bar".
You definataly have to be a people person.
No Gender favoritism, at least half of my tip's are from women. I treat all my customers the same, the non-tippers as well as the tippers.
