i mean seriously... its not like your going 30mph, ur going slow enough to see if there are no cars. and at night if you see no headlights, hear no cars, whats the purpose of stopping?? im asking cause i got pulled over last night by two cops on bikes who harrassed me for like 15 min w/o telling me why they stopped me even though i repeatedly asked... then after 21 questions they finally told me it was cause i ran a stop sign..... just wondering what the big deal is?

Yes. Any vehicle on the road has to obey the laws of the road, regardless of what is powering that vehicle.

Yes, most of the road rules that apply to cars apply to bikes as well, including stopping at stop signs and also at traffic lights.

The cops were right to be aggressive in their interrogation of you.

Why do I think they were right to act that way, you ask?

Because when I was a junior in high school riding my bike home from the local library one day, I crossed a sidestreet without stopping and looking 1st, and a huge Dodge Ram came from out of nowhere as we both rode past the stop sign at the same time, smashing me off my bike and onto the ground.

The only thing that saved me was that the driver of the truck made contact mostly with the left handlebar of my bike instead of with me, but most bikers aren't so lucky and end up paralyzed or dead from such accidents.

Trust me, if you don't have the discipline to follow this rule now, it might take a car accident for you to gain it, like I did.

Yes...you're supposed to obey the laws of the road, same as everyone else. Nice to see that the police actually stopped you.....If you can supply their names, I will be sure to express my thanks to them for doing this. Unfortunately, if you have an accident, the motorist that hits you will still have to live with the fact that you're dead, even if you deserved it. Newspaper headline a few weeks ago.....Experienced cyclist killed at intersection. Witnesses all testified that the cyclist ran the red light. Interviews, with the cyclist's family came up with comments that "We don't hold any ill feeling towards the driver" I'm sure that the driver is quite grateful for their generosity, and forgiveness, since he did NOTHING wrong in the first place.

Yes because you are considered a vehicle so if you run a light or stop sign and you get hit by a car it is your fault because you ran it. the driver of the car would not have to pay you anything and you would have to pay for any damages or injuries to the people in the vehicle

Your bike is a vehicle and therefore has to follow the rules of the road. Ever been to Italy? I'd rather have rules. Cops generally bother young people on bikes to follow the rules so that you get in the habit of doing so.

A bicycle is a "motorcar" in step with the site visitors code. even as i replaced right into a police officer in California, we used to jot down people site visitors citations for all time for being inebriated on a motorbike (weaving in and out of site visitors, making automobiles swerve, very undesirable stuff) and it replaced into similar to a DUI in a automobile. the approach, punishment, prosecution replaced into all an similar as a "automobile DUI". So, sure, a bicycle rider is lower than an similar guidelines as a motorcar. Signaling, staying in marked lanes, staying off the sidewalks, minimum and optimal % regulations, etc.

For your OWN safety, STOP at all stop signs. It also is the law, BUT think of your life and limb. THATS the biggie!! A lost few seconds is NOT worth your life!!

Good luck, Pops
