your animal has to learn to trust people. start with little walks and then slowly introduce to areas that have more people. i found that it would help if i gave friends treats who would toss them to him to start a relationship with him. as he gets more and more comfortable start allowing people to get close to him or even pet him or throw his familiar toys to him.
enrolling your pet in a PetsMart class might also help him...their sessions are small and personable and most stores have vets that visit or are on site that may determine what your animal's behavioral pattern is.

Try a quick loud noise. Clap of a hand or a loud "ENOUGH". This will be enough to get the dog's attention. Find something to keep the dog distracted while the source of it's barking is near. Do not pet or try to calm the dog while he barks as this will reinforce the behavior. Once the dog has settled, give him a treat. Eventually he'll get the picture that it's not ok to act that way.

EDIT: You don't want your dog associating the doorbell with you getting angry. This will do nothing but confuse him. The dog needs to understand that when mom and dad let people in the house he has to accept it. This is why you have to get his attention on something else until he settles down and then reward him. Make him realize that it's no big deal. The more attention you give him the less likely he is to learn to stop. If you put him in a crate or outside everytime someone comes over your dog won't learn to stop barking. He will just learn that he isolated from his pack at the exact time when he feels he needs to be protecting them. This will increase your problem. The dog will get anxious as he knows he's going to be locked up each time someone knocks. Keep the dog in the room and learn to calm him.

I am sure to help you with this question... my dog is two years and stop barking jumping and growling at people at the age of 5 months.First if your dog is lovable and lets you pet him but dosen't like strangers then thats good...that means you can hold him and keep him under control. When people ring the door bell or knock on the door put your dog in a cage or try to get a chocker put it on him..let him sniff the people at the door and put him or her outside.Everytime he growls or barks scold him..hold his nose tight say NO! really loud but not too loud..lol....anyway keep saying it and scold him with your finger too..everytime he growls or barks scold him and put him in the crate or whatever you use to hold him in....Trust me he will stop cold Turkey. He'll become a lovable sweet not growling dog.

You can't really stop it growling/barking at others so I would keep it inside except to go to the bathroom. My dog who did the same thing was left outside while we were busy & it bit or neighbor we had to give her to the pound, so trust me keep it inside

We would spray water in our dog's face everytime he barked and growled at people and say "No Bark". Now he hardly ever does it and not nearly as loud as he would before.

dogs have a good sense of judgment even through some might act dumb they know when its not right , or when people just don't like animals .just sit back and watch and see if your dog barks at certain people or not.

That's a dog's JOB---you can only stop it in mean ways like shock collars!
Just let him do it to strangers, and when he gets to know your family/friends, he won't bark at them.

stop allowing it....you need to assume the role of pack leader. you can kennel the dog when it starts either of these behaviors or you can back him up until he submits(head down, gives up). At the clinic we used a broom...don't hit the dog or swing at him....just put the broom between you and the dog and back him up until the behavior stops. You must be consist ant and address the behavior each and every time until it stops. good luck

Put bolts or coins in a tin can and shake it when he does this. I Have a barker, and it worked for me.

Get the collar thing that you can set yourself. Or one that you control if you want that much control.

Or a training class.
