Mormons show how much you actualy know of your history. Will any two of you have the same answer? Will it even matter to you if you don't.

you true believers, this is a very important thing for you to care about. If it is true that Joseph Smith married women who were currently married. That was EVIL. Forcing a woman to keep secret the marrage to a second man.......does that sound like a good and honest God that would condone that? Does God have to do his work in secret in the shadows out of the light of day? NO! There are so many secrets that Joseph and his gang have to keep. Keep to present day. All of God's deeds can stand up to close inspection. They need not be kept secret or only talked about behind closed doors.

I am LDS and will answer your question. However, trivia is not vital to our eternal salvation nor is polygamy so, no it will not matter.

Perhaps the earliest documented marriage was between Joseph Smith and Fanny Alger in the 1830's.

However, polygamy goes all the way back to the old testament with great prophets such as Abraham and Jacob. So, if you have issues with polygamy, take them up with God.

Hope this helps.

Joseph Smith was the first in the church to practice polygamy. And I can only imagine that none of his other wives were already married. To my knowledge that was never allowed. Men could have more than one wife, but women could only have one husband - hence it is called polygamy.
There is another term (although I forget what it is) for women who have more than one husband, and still a third term for women and men who have more than one spouse while still being married to each other.

Who cares? I have no concern about what happened then, it doesn't effect me in the slightest. It doesn't prove or disprove anything about the gospel. Back then, the people obeyed the commandment from God to do it and we obey the commandment now not to do it.
Yes, some members practiced polygamy, yes it was a Revelation from the Lord to do it, no not every male member had multiple wives, very few did in fact. Yes, I could give you lots of reasons as to why they practiced it, but the most important one and really the only one that matters is because the Lord commanded them to. That's it. If our prophet told us tomorrow that we should all wear red or quit mowing our lawns or put water in our cars instead of gas, because the Lord revealed to, guess what: I would do exactly as he said.
D&C 138:38 What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.
I have faith that the prophet speaks to God, knows how he wants the church to be run and I would follow any commandment or revealtion given because I know from whom it came.

Prophet Joe (Joseph) Smith was the first LDS man to have more than one wife. His wives were not married to anyone but Joe.

The first revelations Joseph smith received concerning polygamy were specifically about him, and he did try to lure away another's wife. I forget if he was successful, but I'm thinking yes. Oh he took quite a few.

"I would ask you if Jehovah has not in all ages tried His people by the power of Lucifer and his associates; and on the other hand, has He not tried them and proved them by His Prophets? Did the Lord actually want Abraham to kill Isaac? Did the Prophet Joseph want every man's wife he asked for? He did not, but in that thing was the grand thread of the Priesthood developed. The grand object in view was to try the people of God, to see what was in them. If such a man of God should come to me and say, "I want your gold and silver, or your wives," I should say, "Here they are, I wish I had more to give you, take all I have got."

I echo Pinkadot1's reply, regardless its length. The bottom line was that the Lord commanded it at the time and a very small percentage of worthy Mormon men participated in plural marriage.

Joseph Smith was the first to practice polygamy - he did that BEFORE he had his "revelation"

My understanding is that he also took wives whos husbands were gone on a mission somewhere. (they say he didn't have sex with them....)
