Wow, for a family of five, it will be difficult to find an affordable place in Manhattan, unless you are willing to squish into two bedrooms.

You should check Craigslist for sublets of houses in Brooklyn and Queens. It will be worth the extra travel time into the city to have more space for your family.

Depending on where you are from, you might also want to look into apartment exchange programs where someone gets your apartment when you are gone and you get an apartment here. It might work out to be cheaper in the long run.

If you are trying to keep it as cheap as possible, stay outside of the Disney property. There is a large Marriott comples just outside that has the whole span of Marriott properties from Fairfield Inn to Residence Inn. You will have to pay for parking daily at the parks. Staying in the parks at the "value resorts" is a more expensive option but it gets you full use of the Disney "transportation system", aka the buses. These are clean motel type places with a large central swimming pool. They have (not cheap) food courts... but they are very convenient. Load up the car with food and drinks for the room to save money if you want to stay there. There is also a McDonald's just outside the motel area if you're dying for some all-american grease. But don't bank on finding the dollar menu items there.
