Please excuse the wording of the question, i know it doesn't make much sense. i just want to know how much tax the average person in the UK pays overall.

There are three rates of income tax (10%, 22%, 40%) plus national insurance contributions (10%). As a generalisation, assume about third of you salary will go on taxes.

To calculate this properly you first need to know the average wage. Have a look on the inland revenue web pages for tax levels as they are different as another post here specifies.

22% is correct for income tax at standard rate, but when you add National Insurance contributions it takes it closer to 30%

self employed pay twice a year jan and july £9000 ayear on £42000 must buy a missle or two
