Wedding invitations should be sent out 6 - 8 weeks before the wedding date. If the wedding is on a holiday or popular weekend, lean more toward two months. If you've sent out save the date cards, don't send out inviation any earlier than 6 weeks.
You want to give guests a good amount of time to work the wedding into their schedule, but now so much time that they forget about the ceremony.
And remember, the people who are in the top tier of guests that you really want to have attend, will already know about the wedding date and will already have it saved on their calendar.

If you are going to have Save-the-Date cards, those should be sent out 4-5 months before the wedding...then the invites are sent out 6-7 weeks before the wedding. You should also have a few lists of invitees. List "A" is for those people who you can not live without having at the wedding; list "B" is for those people who you would love to have, but can't because list "A" is already so long...once you get a "no" response back from a list "A" invitee, then send out one to a list "B" invitee...you shouldn't send out invites after the 4 week mark, or so.

I wouldn't send them out four months in advance. Even with holiday weekend weddings, most planners recommend 8 weeks in advance and 6 at the latest. Also remember that the deadline needs to be 6-8 weeks in advance of when you need your headcount, not the actual wedding date. My wedding was May 27th, headcount was needed May 13th, so I sent the invites out in early April.
P.S. If you use save-the-date cards, then they can be sent out a month ahead since people already are aware of the date.

You typically want to mail your invitations 6-8 weeks before your wedding date. If you’re having a destination wedding we recommend mailing them 10-12 weeks before your wedding date.

I think it differs are you having them RSVP... if so then you need to send them 5-6 weeks in advance from when you want the RSVP's back.... if your not requiring RSVP than I would say you could send them out, 4-5 weeks ahead of the wedding.

6-8 weeks is proper. However you can send out "save our date" things like 6 months ahead.
