yes before the time of Jesus the Jews would purify themselves before they would inter a holy place, the temple of Solomon for example. outside these holy places they would have huge tubs where the Jews would "Bathe" (I guess is a good way to put it) and after a woman would give birth she was ordered by Jewish law to purify herself in the same manner.

Yeas there was a jewish ritual in wich a converted person (former gentil) was washed before he or she was received. But the baptism of John the baptist had another meaning than the jewish ritual, it was a baptism of repentence. The following christian baptism has also another meaning than the baptism of John the baptist. The meaning of the christian baptism is to symbolise the death to the old life of the new convert and the rising to a new life with Christ the Saviour.

Be aware of something please. Baptism is in Christ authority 1 Cor. 10:2, alluding to Exodus 14. (Christ was the pillar, but that is a longer story). The water (John 3) part can be taken a few ways. However, water is required for 'baptism' but that is as available as 'humidity'; allowing for ones personal faith.

We don't know. What difference does it make anyway? The important thing is that John did it and the Lord, our God, in human form chose to submit Himself to this as a sign of humility and love of God and man.

Thank you, Jesus.
