Bill Burke, a little known professional golfer, shot 54 in a professional tournament at the St. Louis Country club in 1986. His record was recognized on the professional tour up until about the mid '90s. The event was not a PGA Tour event and he was not as member of the PGA Tour so, they don't recognize it. It is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records. Like George Archer, Bill was not a really popular guy with the media so the media doesn't talk about it any more. He was a very nice guy and a gentleman. He was offered the head pro job at Dorado in the early 90s but turned it down. Bill went on to a career in computer graphics. He once gave me a dozen Titleist balls at the Comdex computer show. He died in his sleep in the mid 90s.
The lowest PGA Tour recognized score is 59 first shot by Al Geiberger in 1977 in Memphis. Chip Beck shot 59 in Vegas in 1991. David Duval shot 59 at the Bob Hope Classic in 1999.
Jason Gore, Notah Begay, and Doug Dunakey have scored 59s on the Nationwide tour.

Only score recorded in official competition should count as other scores are difficult to verify. With that in mind 59 - Al Geiberger, (29-30), 1977 Memphis Open. 59 - Chip Beck, (30-29), 1991 Las Vegas Invitational. 59 - David Duval, (31-28), 1999 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Lower scores outside competition or on less than par 72 regulation course have been recorded

Al Geiberger, Chip Beck and David Duval are the only players to shoot 59 on the PGA Tour, and Annika Sorenstam shot a 59 on the LPGA Tour. Mickelson shot a 59 but his score will not count in the record books because the PGA Grand Slam is not an official event.

I think Marayama shot a 58 in a practice round about 3 years ago but as it was in a pre comp round it didnt count.
Duval shot a 59 about 5 years ago, i saw him play 2 weeks later at my local golf course, unbelievable player. I dunno where he went wrong.
