Start with what you already know. Or ask an older relative.
You can do all of your research for free but its when you need to get the proof of the information that you start spending money.

So the family records office is very good. You only pay for copies of the original entries.

The website is very good for giving you info on how to go about everything.

I have personally tried most websites and subscription services..and have been disappointed...

im doing mine on www.genesreunited .co.uk you can get some info free but to contact other members you have to join, it only costs £9.35 for a year and is well worth it as you really need to verify all info..just because someone has the name, date of birth and birth place as your ancestor, dont assume it is an ancestor.a lot of the time cousins etc had the same name in the same generation...feel free to e-mail me if you get stuck and i will do my best to help

There are many, try Rootsweb.com for starters.
Remember to document our source! As you progress you will find conflicting information an you will need to know where you got your information from.
