Looking to hunt dear and wild boar. I have two of these and plenty of ammo and was wondering how it hunted.

Bound's hubby here:

The 8mm Mauser round should be adequate for deer and boar, provided that you use hunting ammo, not surplus Full Metal Jacketed rounds.

A few things to consider ...
First, make sure you have properly sighted in your surplus rifle. I have a 98K M48 that shoots rather decently to the sights, but not good enough in my book for hunting. My shooting buddy has a WWII proof house 98K that does not shoot to the sights. Consider a Long Eye Relief scope on a forward mount for your hunting needs.

Second, the 8mm Mauser is kinda like Germany's response to the .30-06 ... German troops fired the .30-06 in their rifles when they ran out, and cound confiscate American ammo ... the 8mm bullet is as heavy as the '06 ... and only a few thousandths larger in diameter!

Surplus Mauser

If you mean the rifle, yes they are decent, Mauser 98k are pretty accurate to really accurate all depending on the rifle.

The 8mm round is a nice round, if you mean surplus ammo, it is not good for hunting. The surplus is fmj or full metal jacket, which does not fragment or expand on impact thus sailing through the deer doing as little damage as possible.

But, 8mm ammo is found in lots of sporting goods store in cheap jhp or jacket hollow points which expand, for close and even long range, I have found Remington Core-Lokt bullets to be great, with Federal Ballistic Tips for long range.

The 8mm fmj will not get deflected by trees and twigs and stuff, it is possible and has happend, but it would be likely to go through stuff, possibly trees. I know the 7.62 or U.S. .30 cal does. So keep your surplus ammo for the next U.S. invasion or coup or something and spend 20 bucks and buy some good cartridges.
Happy Hunting!

It is Excellent. The Mauser is one of the best bolt action rifles ever made, and the 8mm cartridge is comperable to a 30-06 or a .308.
Plenty of hunting (not FMJ surplus) ammo is avalible and the Mauser is capible of great accuracy at long range. Make sure you sight in with the ammo you are going to use.

Without all the semi- technical B.S., I've seen for answers.
The 8mm mauser is a great round! you can find hunting ammo
at your local sporting goods store. Like any other firearm,
sight it in and go from there. Happy Hunting.
The 8mm is Germany's answer to the 30-06....yeeeesh!

Should be OK though a bit light. Hi-velocity round not made for firing in twig-filled forests as your round can take off. Try not and let him get too close lest you have to use a spear (lol). Not sure whether you can get that in 180 grain though - would be advisable if you get a big one comng at you. I have used a Mannlicher 7.65 - Mauser action - for similar hunting (Not the Carcano - not accurate) here in Canada. Rounds hard to get for it though. Sigh.
