Sounds like Capoeira is the art for you...

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art developed initially by African slaves in Brazil. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, subterfuge, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts.

And Capoeira IS a REAL martial art, maybe not as traditional as a lot of close minded people would prefer, but once you feel the speed of one of those kicks sweep you off your feet, it's as real as any other martial art out there!!!!

Actually, a lot of the daring movements you see in breakdancing, can trace their roots back to moves in Capoeira. It's a great art with tons of movement, back gainers(flips) etc.. I'd recommend checking it out, it's lots of fun to do and is totally a great workout. Really helps add fluidity and flexibility, and is a great supliment to any other martial art as well...

Here are a few great sites to get you better aquainted with this particular art:

Here's a great YouTube video of Capoeira Sul da Bahia, it will let you see this beautiful martial art in action!

Hope this helps, good luck, hope you find the art that is right for you!

well there are no traditional styles of martial arts but their are some untraditional arts that do teach this....
XMA is one....but it is a mostly a show art or what i consider to be a martial sport

Caporea (dont know if spelling is right) is another form of a MA that teaches flips and more flashy stuffs to do

and at high levels of specific types of the animal forms in Kung Fu teach flashy stuffs as well.....
while these arts do infact teach flips, flairs, butterfly kicks and such they are all pretty ineffective when it comes to practical use
there is also this art form (not a martial art though) that originated in France called Le Parkour (i would recommend checking it out on google video or Youtube is pretty cool) that could easily be paired with ninjitsu or any other fast paced fighting style but thats pretty much the only way you are going to get a art that teaches you flips and what not is to go to gymnastics or learning something like Le Parkour

Hey. Flips are mostly used today in gymnastics, to show off or in French "free running", called Le Parkour, which is basically city running, climbing walls, overcoming obsticles, etc. It is quite effective if one lives in the city, and you need to get away quickly. As was said above, almost no martial art would teach you flips, as they are. Also, taking up martial arts just because they do backflips, would not be wise either. What I suggest you do is to go find a good martial art for yourself; and if you are willing to learn backflips, ask someone about Le Parkour, because they would be probably the best in it (that, or capoeira). Be aware though that capoeira is also traeted as a spiritual dance, not just martial art. Different martial arts teach you different things. Some have strong punches some have strong kicks, grabs, throws, chokes, etc. What I am doing is bujinkan ninjutsu and it is concidered as a deadliest martial art (just for information). It also teaches you how to get out of trouble unharmed by any means. Kung fu (or wing chun - variation of kung fu) are the oldest martial arts out there, got started by monks in Tibet. Kung fu has lots of speed, flexibility and aesthetics to it, looks amazing, really. Well, I leave it up to you from here, hope I was of some help. Nick Z

Dude, you've prob'ly seen the people in the XMA or Extreme Martial Arts (something you have to get into in the Regular Martial Arts schools that offer this), it's not real it's just for show in demonstrations and competitions to look cool or more dramatic and get more points for style to win the competition; there's no practicality in it, PERIOD. end of story.

You should only do it if you plan on going to competitions for freestyle forms where you can do stuff like that.

and no you won't do that stuff in class, unless it's in Capoeira or Taido, but they usually don't do such dramatic looking techniques you go to bouncin around like that in a real fight and you're likely to get your a-- handed to you. even someone who practices Taido would prob'ly tell you that they wouldn't use those flipping techniques in a real fight on the street.

really man think about it, do you see them performing a feasible kick or punch with all that acrobatic stuff? I mean yeah it's cool and everythin' but DON'T get into Martial Arts for that reason because you'll get a reality check real quick and be SERIOUSLY disappointed.

Because that's not what Martial Arts is about anyway OK? so don't get it twisted or confused.

Taido also does this (thanks DEAD BROKE, you reminded me of that discipline), but you gotta have good timing, and I mean GOOD timing, good skills or hospital bills; know what I mean?

plus it's only practiced in Japan as far as I know.

If you want to do things like flipping from standstill, you should go to gymnastics lessons. I know people who have. Flips are very unefficient in real martial arts. They take up time, energy, and while you are in the air you are a sitting duck to an experienced fighter. In real fighting, it is best to keep both feet on the ground at all times, except of course when kicking.

capoeria is most likely what your referring to. It was made as a dance/MA when slaves were brought to the united states. It is an effective Martial Arts which requires extreme flexibility, focus. It has throws, punches, kicks (high and low), as well as jujitsu-like lockouts. In it's dance form the person is in constant movement allowing them to intercept or avoid a strike. Most teaches i know of are located in the Florida area (i can't give you names at this point).

There are no flips in traditional style martial arts. so if you want to learn to do flips take gymnastics then put them into use along with karate techniques. this is good when you are doing demos.

Stop getting idea from video game and movies! Flipping in real fight is asking for trouble. It also serve absolutely no purpose at all.

The capoeria video nm angel eye show is crap! The only reason it work is because two person work together as a team. If you tell them to fight against eachother, they would end up brawl like school boys.

flipping is not practical in real martial arts.

capoeria does this kind of flashy crap but people don't consider it a martial art because it is ineffective (at least the way it is taught today with the flipping and dance crap).
