Its usually more the way its asked rather than the fact that it is!

I think people tend to automatically assume that the asker means something bad by the question. On the internet it can be hard to know the asker's intentions and attitude because you can't judge by their tone like you would if you were talking to them face to face. Race is a sensitive subject for a lot of people and I guess they just assume the worst and take the question badly, not realizing it wasn't meant that way.
I've asked about race myself and got called a racist for wanting to understand a particular culture even though the way I asked the question didn't indicate any racism. After that I've learned to add a comment like "I'm not trying to offend anyone or stir some trouble, I just want to know so I can understand you better." I've noticed that that reduces misunderstandings and upset reactions.

Because whether we like to believe it or not, racism still exists every single day, everywhere. And when people ask questions regarding race and thigs, everyone has a different opinion, and everyone who disagrees just assumes the question or statement is just racist, whether it was intended to be or not. As a waitress, I realized that all races are racists. Which is why you will hear "white people" say that "foreign people" don't tip. Its just everyone being racist. The waitress AND the customer. Maybe someday we as people can learn to accept each others differences. But Hell will have frozen over by then I'm sure.

Maybe it's because when a person asks something about a specific race, you are targeting that specific race and it seems that you're making the assumption that ALL of them do the same thing. For example (and this is JUST an example, people..), to ask "Why do black men like women with big butts?" is to assume that all black men prefer women with bigger butts, which certainly isn't the case at all. To target a specific group implies that, that group alone does those certain things. Of course, as mentioned, this isn't the case at all. I think that's why people get upset when you ask questions regarding race. You are targeting just them.

Great question/observation. It seems to me that people are hypersensitive about race and sexual preferences because it is infringing on the "new speak" politically correctness.
Many of us who are older are less PC than younger people because teachers and television, movies and media are constantly driving home beliefs that any questioning is pervasively cruel and vicious toward the perceived victim.
Older persons generally make their decisions independent of outside pressures. Well, all of us are, to some extent, problems of our biases and parental/guardian prejudices. Young children are not innately prejudiced, but learn this behavior by example from parents, schools, churches. I, myself, am biracial Irish and Native American (with a little bit of Black in the mix). Who cares? Not I. I am far more interested in where I am going and not terribly interested in where my gene pool came from. I am me! I am free! I am unique! I am loved! I am trusted! I am caring and cared for. Why should I waste one iota of my life worrying about someone else's fears.

Because people have nothing better to do than complain. If someone wasn't asking questions that they couldn't complain about they probably wouldn't be sticking around on here.
Or they claim that it is racist when it is not the result that they want. But of course only childish like people do this, that can not refute the facts and feel like its the only resort to get their way.

i do not get disillusioned even as people discuss race i imagine i'm purely baffled that that is such an difficulty and that each and every thing is about race with some people. i do not recognize it. I see people as people. i don't believe of that is a race area.

Not everyone gets upset over it (in fact I don't know anyone who would get upset over it if the question was put forward diplomatically) some people just want to get angry so they take offense at everything. Try and avoid these people.

Race is a very sensitive subject. People get offended because they ASSUME you mean your question in a bad way whether you do or not.

How does one know on this site, if a question is really sincere, or just a way to put people down. It all depends how the question is asked and for what purpose.

Am sorry that has been your experience.
Guess we are all guilty of race, gender associating from experience.
If someone takes it too personally, may be from past experiences - cut them some slack and try to understand where they are coming from - but then again - some folks are just rude.
