I asked this question in another section and didn't get many answers, so I'll present it again here, since this one seems to get more traffic.

To make it short, what do you think of a man who has a cat(s) for a pet(s)? The other day, I was reading through one of those supposed-to-be-humorous "Rules For Men" lists, one of the ones that say things like "If you've known another guy for more than 24 hours, his sister is off limits" and "You can complain about the temperature of the beer in a buddy's fridge, but not the brand." Well, the one I read had a rule that said "A man should NEVER own a cat for a pet."

Sounds silly to me. First of all, a lot of women have dogs. Second of all, what is so wrong with a man having a cat for a pet? I think that all these rules people come up with are silly.

I don't see anything wrong with it. My husband is the one always bringing home the poor strays that he finds on the road (kittens mainly). To me a man owning any pet and caring for it properly shows a good soul and a sense of responsibility.

Yes, all those rules sound silly to me. Get a cat, if you have a cat...Pat the cat. What difference does it make? In the end you have to be in control of your own life. You are the one person that will be with you the rest of your life. Make up your own mind. I can't stand garbage like that book you have. I think more meaningful books are found in the spirituality section. My personal favorite is the Bible. The rules in there are a little easier to follow.

First of all, it is just a humourous suggestion. Second of all, I think it has to do with the fact that cats are seen a "feminine" and dogs are "masculine", thus women own cats and men own dogs. Cats are more clean and prissy, whereas dogs are more rugged and dirty. See where I'm going here? After all, there's a phrase that links men with dogs.."A man's best friend is his dog". Personally, I think it's all BS. If a man owns a cat and treats it properly and with respect, it's a reflection of how he's going to treat me. I think men who like animals and treat them well are the great ones.

I think that the "rules" books are just meant to be humorous. I don't know that anyone really takes them seriously-or at least, they shouldn't. Personally, I hate cats. And my impression would be that a guy who owns a cat is a little effeminate because I think that cats are pu$$ies. I think that men who own small dogs are effeminate also for the same reason. But that doesn't mean that I wouldn't get to know him just based on that.

I used to live in Mexico and lots of guys there have cats for pets - and those who don't aren't afraid to say they love cats! I don't know why guys in the US think it's lame.

I think it's cute when a guy has a pet cat. Cats are so different from dogs - it takes a different kind of relationship. It's more of a partnership. With dogs, the guy is needed and knows he'll always have to be there.

I couldn't help but think of the joke...

Women love cats. Men say they love cats. When women aren't looking men kick cats.

Seriously though, don't take those books for anything more than they're meant to be...humorous. Afterall, real men aren't supposed to eat quiche either. My husband loves quiche and cats and he's the most amazing man I've ever known.

I never heard of such a stupid rule. I guess some folks think cats aren't a manly pet. I say hogwash!! A man owning a cat would never be a deal breaker for me!

I have a male boss that thinks cats and women are alike. They only come around when they want something. On the flip side work with a guy that has 4 cats and one dog. Both are nice guys neither of them a sissy.

cats are associated with femininity in our society...that's where that "rule" comes from....
but reality is that cats outnumber dogs in this country and a good percentage of those cats are owned by men...
my husband has 2 cats and has had them for over 10 yrs....
