Before getting another dog, you might want to train the dog you already have. Because more often than not the new dog will pick up your other dogs habits. Then you will have 2 jumping dogs.

As you can tell, you are just going to get answers for everyone's personal favourite dog. This question is asked on here numerous times a day, so you might want to use the search box for some better answers than "I grew up with a blah-blah, so it would be perfect for you."
In general, you don't want a
- toy breed as they are too fragile for small children and can be bitey (shih-tzu, doxies, yorkies, etc)
- Super large breed like a mastiff or a great dane. They can accidentally hurt children
- Sighthound (whippet, saluki, Afghan, borzoi, Italian Greyhound, Greyhound) because if your child leaves the door open or the gate open, the sighthound can run away never to return
- Flight risk dogs like a Husky. Ditto sighthound reason.
Check out your local rescue groups. If you don't have your heart set on a specific purebred dog, they have a ton of great dogs available. Mixed breed and purebred. I see tons of smaller lab mix type dogs (medium sized dogs) come through looking for homes. They are usually very gentle and in need of a loving family. There are also a ton of beagle and beagle mix dogs that come through in my area. Great family dogs.
Good luck in your search! : )

I agree that you should try training the big dog not to jump first. A lot of larger breeds are better with children in my opinion. And any dog you get will have to be trained not to jump on people.

Your larger dog jumps on the kids because you haven't trained it. No dog is born knowing good manners, you must teach them.
So almost any dog will be a "good, well mannered, child-friendly housedog"....if YOU take the time to teach it. Otherwise it will likely be an unruly brat, no matter what breed it is.

Dogs need training in order to be well-mannered and child-friendly. They don't come pre-trained. Maybe you should take your current dog to an obedience class first before trying to get a new dog.

Any breed can be depending on the individual dog's temperment, socialization, and training.
Before getting another dog, I suggest training the one you have to follow basic obedience, as well as not to chase/jump on the kids. If you get another dog, the new dog will pick up these behaviors from the resident dog.

I KNOW THE ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! U should get a bullmastiff! the greatest dog ever! Has no problem with kids, very well mannered, and not noisy at all. They only bark when they have to plus that they are great for protection. I HAVE A 4 YEAR OLD BULLMASTIFF AND I ADORE HIM. My advice to you is to get a female, for they are less stuborn then the males. Here's more on this breed, read it: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bullmastiff.htm

Collies are wonderful dogs for kids. They've even been used as trained seeing eye dogs specifically for children. I had a pure breed collie (an older rescue dog) and have never met such a perfect dog since.

Any dog if you train it right. I used to have this huge German Shepard who looked just like a wolf. She was so lovable and playful, she used to give my neighbors "horsey" rides when they were small. My friend's parents have two little dogs but they are horrible because they are allowed their run of the house, sticking their noses on the table while we're eating, jumping up on people (no matter the size), licking like crazy, chewing anything they can get a hold of. So small dogs aren't always the way to go. Just train them right, size won't matter.

Any dog will be a good, well mannered, child friendly house dog if you train it to be.
It is not in the breed of dog as much as the training.
