You can actually drain the milk out first into a cup and then crack the shell open with a hammer.

Insert a strong metal manual drill into one of the holes (make sure it's clean and be careful not to slip and slice into your hand.) Pour off the milk into a container. Place the coconut on its side. with the hole at one end. Then, prise open the coconut by inserting a bradawl into the hole you just drilled. You may need a hammer to crack the shell. Once you get into the nut, any remaining milk should be retained in the curvature of the bottom half.

Here's what you do: Put the coconut into a tupperware/plastic bowl. Pound it with whatever. The milk will all spill, but it will spill into the bowl. Of course, you will have to pick coconut bits out of the milk. But it's probably eaiser to do it that way than to try to smash it/open it without spilling.

Don't you mean 'get the milk out of the coconut' - I don't think you could get into a coconut somehow!

If you have a power drill, drill a hole in the softer center top and pour out the milk before breaking the nut apart with a hammer.
