My wife worked for BASF for 23 years and as a family we have been to Germany many times... When my son was 16 we sent him to an immersion school in Germany for two months to learn German (Wife also speaks German). We had a German Au Pair live with us for a year after my daughter was born. And I go away every Spring for a week to play golf with two friends, one of who is German. So, I think that I am qualified to say what I think of Germans.

Germans generally are like everyone else in this world once you get to know them. Most are kind, considerate and fun to be around. As a generalization though Germans tend to act as if they are better than others. They will listen to you and try to understand your view point but when push comes to shove they feel that they are right because they are German! But I can live with that! After all, we did win the war...

With that said, Germany is a beautiful country and should be visited by all.... The food is great and the beer is even better!

Well I think they are great on the whole. Like all nationalities there are Good ones and Bad ones.
Hitler was Austrian before anyone else mentions him!
I speak their language and have never met a German I thought was rude arrogant and all the other stereotypes people give them. I have met other nationalities with those traits though!

Its silly to generalise about any people or race, but neverthelss my impression is this.

Germans are in general very nice people.
Are intelligent brought up with green ecological ideas.

The women are sexy in many ways.

They lack dark humour and will fail to react when joked to on most occasions.

Don´t immediatly get familiar with people and some older people spend years calling thier neighbour or workmate "sie" (unfamiliar form of "you").

They are nosy interfering and grass you up if you do something wrong like park in the wrong place, throw rubbish on the ground or walkover a road when the red man is on.

There are Germans and Germans, the humourless, obsessively tidy crowd in the North and East, and the more easygoing people in the South and West.
They are a bit like US Americans in that they believe everything should be just like they are accustomed to anywhere on the planet, and are put out if it isn't.
As crowds they are as obnoxious as the English, and I try to give them a wide berth, singly they are more educated and open minded than most US Americans, and mostly fun to talk to, although their attitude towards the pronounciation of English is hilarious, one complained to me that those natives in Ireland didn't understand their own language when he ordered a "load of sent(=sand)" for building an extension to his house.

Germans are very different from South (Bayern) to the North. Generally, they are very smart and industrious, but also somewhat xenophobic and arrogant. Germans are set in their ways and traditional, which leads to a wonderful national pride and a sense of history, but also can yield mental inertia and a dogged sense of their own "right ness"
