Ok, so I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed on Nov. 6. Three days later. My mouth and jaw is hurting the same if not worse. The dentist gave me Darvocet-N 100 and it only kills the pain for about 15 minutes! That leaves over 3 hours with being in pain and not being able to take anything. I can barely eat anything. Even mashed potatoes hurt! This can't be normal, can it? How long will this pain last?

I'm also allergic to hydrocodone and he says thats the only thing he can prescribe besides the darvocet.... Really worried cause I can't open my mouth a 1/2 inch. Feel something is terribly wrong. Should I search for another dentist to see if he messed me up?

Totally normal. Try piggy-backing the darvocet with ibuprofin. When I had mine taken out a few months ago, they gave me Tylenol-3, which really only works if you take ibuprofin with it. Your mouth will hurt for a little over a week, then it will get better.

In the meantime, use ice packs on your cheeks and eat ice cream. For a few days I lived on milkshakes from Reid's dairy.

It will get better! I promise. If it feels like it's hurting more, then go get checked for dry socket. You should have received information about this before the teeth were extracted.

I had my 2 lower wisdom teeth removed not long ago and the worst pain was felt about the 2 or 3rd day. I went back to the dentist cause I thought i had a dry socket and he told me I was fine. That the pain is normal and may last up to a week. I would call your dentist and just ask to be on the safe side. Believe I know what you are going thru. The pain is terrible!!! My pain killers didn't work either. If you do not have a dry socket your pain will go away soon, hopefuly. Try a hot pack also. Good Luck!

It does sound like dry socket. One of the main symptoms is that for the first few days you are ok and getting better and then after a few days it gets worse. Also, another sign is that no pain medication will help. Not Darvocet, not vicodin, not ibuprofen or in any combination. This is one of the signs that it is dry socket. The only way to know for sure is to be examined by an oral surgeon. If it is dry socket, if they put the medicated dressing in the extraction site, the pain will be gone in less than an hour.

Swelling is usually the worst after 48 hours and then it improves slowly.

Almost all oral surgeons would not have a problem seeing their patients for sympotms as you describe. I don't doubt you or saying it is your fault but it does seem like something is missing from this story.

If your surgeon won't see you, call your referring dentist to see you or for advice or call another oral surgeon who works close to where you are.

Some complications may occur with extractions. If it doesn't clear in another day or so, I would make and appointment with the dentist, explain to him your condition and ask about an infection known as "dry socket." It has been 3 days since your procedure and more often than not the pain and swelling is at its worst on this day. However if your Darvocet is not alleviating your pain ask him for a different scrip. You can also alternate between hot and ice packs to alleviate the pain. Good luck, tooth extractions are not fun.

Everyone heals differently. I am a very fast healer but my husband heals very slowly. It is also dependent on underlying conditions, do you have diabetes, heart problems, hypertension? All this is taken into account. If the Darvocet is not working. Call your doc and see what else he can prescribe. You should not be in pain as much as you are. I am surprised that you are not on an antibiotic at least for a few days.... you might ask him about this too.

Yeah, it is normal. I had all 4 of mine pulled out in one day, and they gave me Vicodin (which makes me sick to my stomach) and I couldn't take it so I lived off of Tylenol extra strength. But make sure you don't drink out of a straw, smoke cigarettes, etc. because you will get a dry socket. If it doesn't feel a little better after a week I'd say go to the doc! It took about 2 weeks for the pain to go away completely, but after the first week I was fine and could eat. Good luck! : )

Hi, You need to call your oral surgeon right now. The Darvocet does not work for you. When you get the new pain meds know that it will take a little while to get relief. Once you are in pain it is harder to get it under control, but it will get better. They can phone in a new prescription to your pharmacy so have the number available . This is not unusual at all. many people respond differently to pain meds. Don't wait, call now or they will be closed all weekend.. Good luck... CALL RIGHT NOW ! r.n.

Okay to you too,
It is perfectly normal to go through pain after having wisdom teeth removed. My mom had hers removed after I was born. It would be wise not too have any food or drinks too hot or cold while you are in pain. If the potatoes are hot one may have to wait until not too cold. I had a wisdom tooth removed in 2002 the pain lasted for most of the year. The tooth that was extracted was decayed. I hope you will be feeling better soon

All very good answers but I think you might try heat now..... to bring blood to the area and help healing. Do check re dry socket! And antibiotics too!

you probably do have a dry socket. call your oral surgon and he will give you help on that in the meantime when it comes to eating. when i got mine out i made my mom get me slimfast shakes and tried to keep it as far away from my gums as possible. dont use a straw the suction will irritate it. and make it much worse.
