A chronic illness is one from which you get little or no relief or break. Arthritis can be chronic as it never goes away. Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness. So is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Chronic illnesses usually have no cure so some STD's that have no cure can also be considered chronic.

A "chronic" illness is one that is reoccuring. Its not one that can be cured by medications (although they can be helped by them). MS is an example of a "chronic" illness/disease. You can also have a "chronic" condition- ex, I tore tendons in my ankle a few years back and, though they've healed, I still have pain in my ankle which is now a "chronic" condition because there's nothing left to do for it.

It is an illness that never really goes away. Like asthma. You may have it under control, but you always have it.
