Sodium bicarbonate is the chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3. Because it has long been known and is widely used, the salt has many other names including sodium hydrogen carbonate and "sodium bicarb," as well as baking soda, bread soda, or bicarbonate of soda. It is poorly soluble in water. This white solid is crystalline but often appears as a fine powder. It has a slight alkaline taste resembling that of sodium carbonate. It is a component of the mineral natron and is found dissolved in many mineral springs. It is also produced artificially.

Apart from the cooking uses which you can read on the label, bicarbonate of soda is an environmentally friendly and therefore safe agent to use for cleaning. If you have burned a pan badly, tip some of the b.of.s. in and add a little water to make a paste and leave it to get to work for a day or so. You'll find the burned bits just slide off, although it might need repeated dosages, depending on how badly burned the pan is.
It also stops odours in dustbins and drains. No need to dilute, just put the powder down the drain, or onto a paper towel lining at the bottom of the bin - the powder absorbs all the smells.
It can be used for scouring almost anything, including dull jewellery and silverware. Works well on chopping surfaces and boards.
And if you get an itch or a rash, b.of c. diluted in a warm, not hot, bath will take care of it for you.
I'm sure there are lots more uses for this wonderful powder, but can't remember any more right now!
As to how much to use, trial and error ... as it is safe, you can't err on a bad side. If at first it doesn't work, use more ... I remember I had to use a lot to save my enamel pot which was really burned ... but for the bath, a cupful would do it, and for sinks and drains, you don't need a lot. Trust your own sense!

It can be used in baking and sweet making - toffees and peanut brittle (in which case, follow the instructions in the recipe for the quantity), and to remove bitterness from certain fruits (soak in a bicarb/water mix - 1 or 2 tsp should do then). Also, if you put a bit in a saucer in the bottom of your fridge, it should absorb and excess moisture and strong odours. People used to use it to clean their teeth in olden times, which is why Arm & Hammer put it in their toothpaste. Its cleaning, and foaming qualities are what generally makes it useful.

Me old dad used to take a teaspoon with a small glass of warm water before bed as he always had bad indigestion. Tastes really terrible.

I use 1/4 to 1/2 package weekly with a kettle of boiling water to keep my drains running well and smelling better.

My brother-in-law is allergic to everything from natural gas to tomatoes. It is the only cleaner (light abrasive) used in his kitchen and bathroom. Very cheap and effective.

Brush teeth with it and put in cookies.

Well, as others have suggested as a cleaner and for getting rid of smells in fridges, it gets rid of stinky-feet smells if you sprinkle it in your trainers too (just empty it out each morning) and also for whitening teeth, put toothpaste on your brush and then dip into soda, brush teeth as normal and voila - instant white sparkling teeth. gets rid of nasty stains on enamel baths too, make a paste and rub well in and rinse.
