Keep your fingers crossed that you are going to Camp Pendelton. 29 palms is in the desert and hot and not much of a base. Most families live off of the base in Indio or right around the 29 palms area. Put it this way when driving down the street that runs along the side of the base if you blink you've missed it. But it isnt in the middle of nothing since it is real close to Indio and Palm Springs. I just hope you can hang in 120 degree weather because it can get that hot. I grew up right around the Camp Pendleton area and know that base well and it is really nice. They have trail riding and good schools , child care , and medical and great shopping on base. Its been awhile since I have been around 29 palms area so maybe it has grown but I rather doubt it.

I lived in Twentynine Palms thirty years ago. It was "interesting". I had friends there, a job and enjoyed myself. It's beautiful at times. The Joshua Tree National Park is not far away. The town had a bowling alley, grocery stores restaurants, churches and bars back then. I understand that it's grown and now has a mayor and its own police department. There used to be an annual celebration called Frontier Days. Palm Springs is about 55 miles away and you DO NOT want to go there in the summer..it's hot and humid (compared to 29P). Good luck and make the best of your time, wherever you go.

Yes, 29 palms is in the middle of the desert and can get very hot out there. It's very close to palm springs though, which is a nice resort/retirement community. Despite the heat, it's not a bad place to live.

all i can tell you really is that it is nicknamed 29 stumps, my brother was in the marines, he hasn't spoken much of the stumps, but i do hear pendelton is better.
