Don't go jumping to conclusions. Please.
We can't diagnose your daughter for you - and it may just be a dimple. Do you have NHS Direct where you are? The last thing you need is to try to diagnose this over the Internet - you'll just panic yourself.

I know exactly how you feel! I have a 1 1/2 year old son who has the same thing. At first , i didnt notice it because he has a little patch of hair over it. But as soon as i noticed it, i thought he had Spina Bifida. We made an appointment the next day. This was probably about 1-2 months ago.
The results with our son was that he was fine. Its actually quite normal for many children to have spinda bifida to some degree. I know, its sounds crazy, but tis true. As the child grows, the dimple slowly goes away.
Unless your child is having other symptoms related to spinda bifida, then i wouldnt worry, but still see the doctor. Some red-flags to look out for is if your daughter has a hard time walking, painful walking, and overall doesnt use her legs the way she should.

Don't worry about it I have a 5 year old with the same issue, I was worried too about it originally it's called a sacral dimple if the end is seen (by your Doctor) she's fine and if it isn't seen the there could be a form of spina bifida, however I'm sure this would have been noticed at the hospital, when the child was born
Good Luck I sure she'll be fine

I personally had spina bifida (very mild case) from birth. It is always diagnosed before birth nowadays (ultrasound). Mine wasn't because there wasn't ultrasound around in the 70's. If she is walking and both her legs are the same size she won't have spinabifida.
The reason spinabifida is picked up by ultrasound is that under the spine the spinal fluid goes further than normal and in the old days they used to do an operation called an untethering operation. They don't do it now because of the risks of meningitis so they tend to leave it alone anyway.
A lot of children have very visible spines on their backs and they do end in a little dimple - I think it vanishes as we get older. Please don't worry!

hi there. My daughter has a deep dimple at the very base of her spine. It was noticed at her check up at 1 day old. She had to have an x-ray to make sure the dimple was not a hole going through to her spine and to rule out spinabifida. Luckily she got the all clear. She is 2 now and still has the deep dimple. It does not affect her health in any way. She walked at 11 months. You will probably have to take her for an x ray but if she has had no problems before now Im sure all will be fine. If you need anymore info on this please feel free to e-mail me.

The doctors that delivered her would have absolutely noticed spina bifida at birth so don't worry!!
My second son has a "dimple" at the top of his butt crack and it is totally normal. My doc pointed it out at the hospital. Sometimes there rear ends form together differently.
If you are still worried make an appointment at your pediatrician but it is NOT spina bifida. She could not live until the age of 3 with spina bifida or with that undiagnosed.

You're right - the sign of spina bifida is a dimple there - but it's evident from birth. After three years, I really don't think you have anything to worry about.

Our little boy had this from birth. As he got to about 1 year old the hole got bigger and deeper. So we asked for it to be closed up. This was eventually done St Georges hospital in Tooting (South London) . Dont worry to much love . Its quite easy and straight forward to fix . This is called a Spinal Pit , on the same lines as spinabifida but it isnt because the base of the pit is closed ie, the spine is not showing through. Its only day surgery so dont worry to much. It does not impede day to day movements such as running , walking , bending etc. My son is now coming up to 4 years old now and is as fit as a fiddle. We said we wanted this sorted out for hygiene reasons . This really is not as bad as it sounds. Please dont worry to much, there really is no need. Your daughter will be fine.

Just to clarify that spina bifida occurs in varying degrees ranging from quite obvious deformity visible and commonly diagnosed even by lay person, but equally importantly they are hidden with just minor deformity or called spina bifida occulta, where sacral dimple is only visible sign, I would strongly recommend seeing a paediatrician to arrange Scanning to rule out any underlying abnormality

If your daughter has been getting regular checkups and the doctor hasn't been alarmed about anything up until now, please don't panic.
Let the doctor's look at her, and make a diagnosis. From there you and your family can decide a plan of action if there is cause for concern. But please do not count your chickens before they hatch.
