I have a 7 month old female grey/brown tabby. She is lanky and skinny. She is not spayed and has food and water avaliable 24/7. I know some cats are just built lanky but I would really like to put weight on her. Any suggestions?

I'd like to say don't worry about it. As others have said, some cats, especially females, are very slender and petite.

But first I must add a recommendation to have her thyroid function checked. An overactive thyroid could account to her thinness, and if that's the cause it must be treated. An untreated hyperactive thyroid will cause lethal heart disease.

If you get her checked out and her thyroid values are normal, then you can relax and not worry about her slenderness.

Some cats are just naturally slim. I have a 13 yr old cat who looks like an African cheetah. Her sides actually cave in. She has always weighed in at around seven pounds. She had an exam and blood work done this spring and the vet pronounced her to be in excellent health. She is large for a female and has very long legs.

The only time she got up to 8 lbs was when I was feeding Innova cat food. They put potatoes in their food and I think that plumped her up. Unfortunately my other five cats put on an extra two pounds too and that was not good for them so I switched to another food.

Leave her alone and get her spayed as soon as you are able..you do NOT want baby cats around the house, the world is far too full of them as it is. All animals (including humans) have a normal body weight FOR THEM....some are skinny, some are fat, some are in between...there is no way to change how much your cat eats...thin is far better than fat, and your cat will live much longer if she is thin. Good luck

If she has no health problem, I would say you are lucky she is slim. Fat cats have many health risks. If however you want her to get some weight, give her the food she likes most. And if you give her dry food, don't leave it around all day, I think it loses its smell and it doesn't attract them so much. Also, spaying increases their appetite.

I am glad you are having her spayed. People always told me my cats were fat. I fed them Cat Chow and mixed it with 9-lives canned food (or any other good brand).

Your kitty is still young so she has time to gain weight. My kitty used to be skinny when she was that age. Now she is 4 years old and chubby so don't worry it will check up with her.

Over feeding is not really good, but i have to hold my hands up and tell you that i feed my cats chicken, tuna and other meat. Now don't go shouting at me i know i shouldn't but they deserve it as they give me so much love back. no they are not over weight

don't presure your cat to gain wait if necessary. ask a pro like a vet for helpful and healthy advice and ways.
