When without misleading someone too much they are prevented from getting hurt by a lie. Sometimes though honesty is the best policy. It depends on the person/situation.

It's better to tell someone the truth than to let them run into an open blade.
A good technique is to translate the hard, cold truth into nicer wording, as in: "Yeah, you may have put on some pounds, but nothing that can't be lost within a few weeks", instead of saying flat-out "You're fat". People will appreciate it more.
Yes, sometimes the truth hurts, but people will feel much more stupid that no one has told them how it really is. Besides, everyone has to decide for themselves how they want to deal with their issues. By not telling someone the truth, you're basically deciding for them what's best.

It's never ok to lie. If you tell the truth you may hurt someones feelings, but if they find out you lied its worse than being hurt by the truth!!! I would rather be hurt by the truth than lied to EVER!!

The truth is highly over rated. We all say we want to hear the truth; but no one really wants to.
It's not only okay, but preferable to lie whenever your mouth is moving. Tell people only want they want to hear, make them feel good regardless of what the truth is.
Also, you should avoid confrontation at all costs. Rather than confronting an issue, lie about it. This make everyone's life a little bit nicer - at least until the truth comes out. With any luck, you'll be long gone by that time.

The truth at times can be painful...at times, one can be tactful with the truth...Such as when asked: Am I fat? (and they are)...it is acceptable to say something like.. Why, are you feeling fat?...If the answer is yes...then...just say..."Well, I know how you feel...I don't even get on the scales anymore". or..."I know how you feel...I could stand to lose a few pounds myself". or..."Yeah well, I have my deals I'm struggling with too". (I am sure we can all vouch for that.)....or.."Well, maybe you could stand to lose a bit...but I love you just as you are"...but I would never out right lie....nicely avoid if possible...but never lie.....Because you know why?....A fat person knows they are fat...and then they can't trust you to be a truthful person...and so on...people that are asking a question...typically already know the answer....I am assuming you are being asked...if not, and no one is being hurt, and no one is asking and it really is not your business...I would say refrain from giving your opinion of what the truth is....zip it otherwise.

I would lie to save my life or my loved ones' lives.
I had a problem with telling the truth and sparing others' feelings - my mother always said "Speak the truth!" but when I did, she said I was hurting people, so I should shut up.
Is it any wonder children grow up with issues?
Frankly, I would carefully consider the ramifications before I get involved, but, ultimately, I am very straighforward where no one's safety is at risk.

Sometimes what a person does not know cannot hurt them, try to look at it as omitting the facts instead of telling a lie...

It's good to lie when you realize that the person you're lying to is at the end of their rope and a simple lie will give them the energy to pick themselves back up again.
