Im on doxycycline for acne, im looking for a few answers:

1) How long should I be on this for? I've heard overuse of an antibiotic is bad for you.

2) If I stop taking it, will the acne return?

Hopefully someone has experience with this drug, or a pharmacist/doctor reads this! Thanks

I took it one and off for quite a while. Yes the acne eventually returned when I quit taking it. My doctor originally gave me a 6 month prescription..... I don't know, most doctors are careful nowadays....if there was a big harm in it I don't think so many would be prescribing it for extended periods of time. If you're on birth control pills or such it will lower the effectiveness of those, so careful!

I am on Doxycycline right now. My dermatologist gave me a 3 month perscription of it in the summer and told me to come back when I was done. I ran out of it and waited too long to make my appointment (over a month) and my acne started coming back! It WILL come back if you stop taking it. I had to call them up and ask for a refill since the Dr. can't see me until December.

I really don't know what they do if they find an antibiotic is working. They can't have you take an antibiotic forever so I'm really curious to see what the next step is. I was told they might give an even stronger antibiotic to knock it out for good, but I won't know until next month!

Assuming that your acne is responding well to Doxycycline, you will likely be on it for quite a while.

Overuse of certain antibiotics is a huge problem due to resistance that develops. Chronic doxycycline use doesn't seem to be that much of a problem.

If you stop taking it, the acne might very well return and that IS a problem.
